Stars at night:a piece of poetry

The candles flicker, the voices cheer,

Laughter rings so bright and clear.

Hands extend with gifts and grace,

Yet something’s missing in this place.

Smiles surround, yet none suffice,

A hollow heart, a heavy price.

For though today is meant for joy,

His soul remains a stranded boy.

They raise a glass, they sing aloud,

He nods along, lost in the crowd.

Each hug, each wish, each loving glance,

Yet he is caught in wistful trance.

For once, her voice had called his name,

Soft and sweet, like whispered flame.

Once, her hand had held his tight,

Now just a ghost in silent night.

She left too soon, a cruel twist,

A love that fate could not assist.

No gift nor word could bring her near,

No warmth could hush his aching fear.

And so, when all the lights grow dim,

When night stands still and dreams begin,

He steps outside, past sleeping trees,

A shadow lost in midnight’s breeze.

The world is hushed, the stars ignite,

A sea of gold in endless night.

His weary eyes trace every spark,

A lonely heart in search, in dark.

“Where are you now?” he speaks so low,

A question lost to skies aglow.

“Do you still watch? Do you still see?

Are you somewhere, waiting for me?”

A silver gleam, a gentle glow,

A fleeting shimmer, faint and slow.

A trick of light, a tear’s embrace,

Or was it truly her own trace?

His chest caves in, his breath is tight,

A soul still bound in love’s old plight.

He shuts his eyes, a silent plea,

“Just take me there, where you must be.”

But stars won’t bend, and time won’t break,

No path exists for him to take.

So all he does is stand and stare,

Hoping to find her shining there.

And though the dawn may call him back,

To all the faces, love intact,

His heart will always drift away,

To stars at 3 AM… and stay.
